FUT — Follicular Unit Transplantation
The strip technique, and how it differs from FUE.

What FUT actually involves
In FUT, a strip of tissue is removed from the donor area and the follicles within it are prepared for transplantation. The donor area is then closed.
This technique differs from FUE and can leave a linear donor scar. That is the single most important practical difference to understand before choosing between them: FUE leaves scattered points, FUT leaves a line.
Which technique is recommended for you depends on your donor area, the coverage you want and how you wear your hair — it is a clinical decision made at consultation, not a preference set in advance.
Who this is — and isn't — the right choice for
We would rather turn down an unsuitable case than sell a procedure that cannot deliver what you want.
A good fit if
- Patients whose donor characteristics suit strip harvesting
- Patients who wear their hair long enough to cover the donor line
- Cases where a larger single session is being planned
Not the right call if
- Patients who shave or clipper the back of the head very short
- Anyone not prepared to accept a linear donor scar
How the procedure runs
No stage of this is a surprise on the day — here is the full sequence.
- 01
Donor assessment
The donor area and scalp laxity are assessed to confirm the technique suits your case.
- 02
Strip removal and closure
A strip is removed under local anaesthesia and the donor area is closed.
- 03
Graft preparation
The strip is divided into individual follicular units, which are prepared for implantation.
- 04
Implantation
Grafts are implanted into the treatment area following your natural growth direction.
What the period after treatment looks like
Including the stages most clinics gloss over. Exact timings vary between patients — yours are confirmed by the clinic before you go ahead.
Immediately after
The donor closure needs care, and you will be given specific instructions for it.
Donor site review
The clinic confirms when the donor closure is reviewed and what to avoid until then.
Shedding phase
Implanted hairs shed before regrowth begins, as with any transplant.
Regrowth
Growth returns gradually over the following months, on the timeline discussed at consultation.
FUT questions patients ask
Will the donor scar show?
There is a linear scar in the donor area. It is normally covered by hair worn at a moderate length, but very short styles can reveal it.
Why choose FUT over FUE?
For some donor areas and some treatment plans it is the better fit. Because both are offered here, the recommendation is based on your case rather than on which technique the clinic happens to perform.
